Arsenal Update – Arsene Wenger Blasts Xavi

Arsenal FC Update

“I think Cesc has always been torn between his love for Arsenal, that I feel is really genuine, and the desire to play for the biggest team in the world,” remarked Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger.

FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernández recently angered Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, claiming the Gunners are making Cesc Fàbregas “suffer” by not allowing him to join the Spanish champions, Barca.

In an interview posted on Barcelona’s website, Xavi said Fàbregas had told him he has “done everything he can” to force a return to his boyhood club.

“I spoke to Cesc in Ibiza and he said he was suffering, because he really wants to come. It’s what he most wants, he’s done everything he can to come and wants Arsenal to let him go, said Xavi.”

The Spain midfielder’s comments quickly sparked an angry reaction from Wenger, who wants to keep Fàbregas at the Emirates.

“What is important is that Cesc Fàbregas is contracted to Arsenal,” said Wenger. “That is a fact. Arsenal wants to keep him and all the rest is comment.

“If I found Barcelona in exactly the same position, I believe a mutual respect between the clubs should stop this kind of comment. If it is true then it is very disrespectful and it is not the first time that Xavi has been disrespectful to Arsenal.”

Wenger, whose side beat a Malaysia XI 4-0 in the first match of their pre-season tour of Asia on Wednesday, had earlier this week vowed to fight to keep his captain at the club.

The Arsenal manager said on Monday: “I am confident because I hope he [Fàbregas] will see that there will be no greater achievement for him in his life than to lead this team to success and that it will not be the right period for him to leave the club.

“I think Cesc has always been torn between his love for Arsenal that I feel is really genuine and, as well and what you can understand, the desire to play for the biggest team, at the moment, in the world. I think both exist in his head. But he knows that I want him to stay.”

Meanwhile, Fàbregas’s team-mate Jack Wilshere called on the Spaniard to remain loyal to Arsenal, saying that the north Londoners must hold on to their top players if they are to end their six-year wait for a trophy.

“Loyalty is a big part of football and it shows if you are a real man or not,” said Wilshere. “We have got loyalty at Arsenal – players have shown that in the past. Cesc showed that last year and hopefully a few more players can show it this year. Then we will see if we can get a trophy or not.

“We have to keep our best players if we want to win things. Any team wants to keep their best players. Look at Tottenham and what is happening with Luka Modric.

“Robin [van Persie] said he would be devastated if we lose Cesc and it’s the same for me. He has been a role model for me and he is the player I want to aspire to.”

Elsewhere, Wenger claims he has the backing of the Arsenal board concerning his firm stance over the future of Samir Nasri.

The 24-year-old French playmaker has just a year left on his current deal, meaning he could move to a new club for free next summer should he not agree fresh terms at the Emirates for at least another season.

“I think so, I believe that is no problem,” said Wenger when asked if he had the board’s support over the Nasri situation.

“It is a technical decision. On one hand people say I don’t spend enough and when I spend people say I spend too much. It’s very difficult to find the right medium.

“What is important is that the club has a good team and is in a strong financial situation. The decisions are dictated by financial restrictions but not only by that. The most important thing is that the team is right and our financial situation is right as well.”

“He has always had a very good attitude. We are a big club with many good young players so we are confronted with many rumours and speculation.

“But it doesn’t affect much what’s happening inside the club. We have to live with that and you could see when he played that he wasn’t disturbed by that.”

Arsenal Hoping to Keep Cesc Until August 31 Window Closes

Arsenal Hoping to Keep Cesc Until August 31 Window Closes

Striker Gervinho has been signed by Arsenal. Wegner’s main target to partner with Gervinho, Karim Benzema, says he is happy and fit at Real Madrid.

Gervinho, who has now completed his £11 million move from Lille, insists whatever happens life at Arsenal will go on.

”It is football, everything moves quickly,” Gervinho remarked.

”If the club does not manage to keep these players, they will be able to replace them.”

Gervinho added, ”Arsenal will always remain a large club. No-one knows what will happen in the future, maybe in a year or two Arsenal will win titles.”

However Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger still is under stress since he has learned that Pep Guardiola is willing to wait until the deadline day madness make another offer for Cesc Fabregas to finally “bring the Spaniard home.”

The Catalan giants have already bid £27million and £31m this summer but the Gunners continue to stand firm.

Guardiola would love Fabregas to make his Barca debut against Manchester United next week but he is prepared to wait until the very last minute to put Arsenal up against the transfer wall.

Barcelona fly to the US next week and hope to secure Fabregas on the plane.

Barca have been unwilling to increase their bid to £35m – the figure it would take for Arsenal to part with Fabregas – but Guardiola stated he would ‘try to the very last minute’ to land his target.

‘This year Arsenal has agreed to negotiate and we are working on it. Barcelona has made an offer, Arsenal another and we have time until August 31 and we’ll try to reach an agreement.”

‘There is a sum of money set aside for this signing but if it doesn’t work out it will be kept in the box for something
else.”

‘We will fight to the end to try to get Cesc because we believe he will improve the team and the squad.’

Guardiola stated that Fabregas cannot departure from the Emirates Stadium.

“I think that Cesc has to do what Arsenal ask. For me I wouldn’t like one of my players to say “now I’m not training because I want to go”.’

Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta commented about Fabregas stating, ‘The position towards Arsenal is one of maximum respect because the club own the player. Also towards the player.”

‘From there, our position is to try and see eye to eye creating proposals that may be of interest, while always maintaining the maximum respect. We don`t have a style of doing things by force.’

Arsene Wegner was told by the Arsenal board that he has a surplus of cash – and a bid for U21 Spanish star Juan Mata remains imminent.

Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal Manager

Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger has stated that both that Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri will stay at Arsenal for the 2011-12 season.

Arsenal are currently on a pre-season tour and Wenger seemed optimistic about the new season.

Nasri – who has just one year on his current contract – will remain at the club regardless of whether he extends his deal, said Wenger.

‘Will he be at the club this season? I say yes. Will he sign a new contract? I hope yes but I’m not the only one to decide that. There is always speculation when a player has only one contract year to go and has not signed a new contract that he might leave the club. But Samir Nasri is very happy at the club and is committed to staying at the club’.

Wenger also stated he is doing all he can to keep Fabregas on his squad this upcoming season,

‘We know that this story for Barcelona goes on for years now and we have to close that and for ourselves to focus on the season hopefully with Cesc Fabregas’.

The Arsenal boss also revealed that Nicklas Bendtner and Manuel Almunia are set to leave the club this summer with reported interest from Spain and Portugal.

Wenger commented on new signing Gervinho,

‘He has joined today at London Colney, he has come back from holiday and signed. He had a medical on Thursday but we sent him back home because he has a family with children. It was so he has time to sort things out for two days. He came back yesterday and starts his fitness programme in London today. He is officially an Arsenal player now’.

Arsene Wenger has also asked for more respect from FC Barcelona regarding Cesc Fabregas in the future.

Barca’s Xavi recently stated that he chatted with Cesc Fabregas while he was on vacation in Ibiza, reporting that the Arsenal captain said he wanted to leave Arsenal for Barcelona and was suffering at The Gunners.

“I spoke to Cesc in Ibiza and he said he was suffering because he wanted to come,” said Xavi. “It’s more like, he did everything he could to come and wants to leave Arsenal.”

Xavi’s comments were posted on the Barcelona website.

FC Barcelona players and directors have opening been courting Fabregas in recent years.

Arsenal beat Malaysia 4-0 in their first pre-season friendly. Afterwards, replied to recent Xavi’s comments about Fabregas “suffering at Arsenal”.

“What is important is that Cesc Fabregas is contracted to Arsenal,” said Wenger. “That is a fact. Arsenal wants to keep him and all the rest is comment.”

Xavi has spoken about the possibility of Fabregas leaving Arsenal on numerous occasions – previously describing Fabregas as having “Barca DNA”.

“If I found Barcelona in exactly the same position, I believe a mutual respect between the clubs should stop this kind of comment. If it is true then it is very disrespectful and it is not the first time that Xavi has been disrespectful to Arsenal.”

Wenger said that Fabregas can only leave Arsenal if he is genuinely unhappy with the club. After talking with Fabregas last week, Wenger remains confident.

Fabregas is not currently with Arsenal on their pre-season tour of Asia.

Aaron Ramsey scored the first goal against Malaysia with a penalty and then produced a defence-splitting pass for Theo Walcott to double the lead taking the lead in Fabregas’s absence.

Carlos Vela and Tomas Rosicky each scored second-half goals.

Samir Nasri, who will be staying at Arsenal next season, replaced Ramsey after 67 minutes and appeared fit in Fabregas’s usual position.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay £20 million for Nasri, who is currently in the final year of his contract. Wenger says he will be supported by the Arsenal directors in his decision, including owner Stan Kroenke, to refuse all offers.

“I believe that’s no problem,” said Wenger. “It is a technical decision. On one hand, people say I don’t spend enough and, when I spend, people say I spend too much. What is important is that we have a good team and that the club is in a strong financial situation. The decisions are dictated by financial restrictions but not only by financial restrictions.”

Wenger is also confident that the Arsenal supporters will respond positively to Nasri. “He has always had a very good attitude,” he said. “I think everyone who loves Arsenal wants for our strong players to stay.”
