Carling Cup: Ipswich Town 1-0 Arsenal

Ipswich Town 1-0 Arsenal

Although Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Ipswich Town in the Carling Cup – the Gunners do have the second leg of their semi-final coming up.

Arsenal will have to overturn the 1-0 deficit against Ipswich when they play again at Emirates Stadium on January 25 in order to reach the Carling Cup Final.

Arsene Wenger decided to leave Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie home when the squad travelled to Portman Road. Wenger must be surprised that his side have failed to beat two Championship opponents in the past week.

Arsenal make the short journey to Upton Park on Saturday to face West Ham. The Hammers still have a strong chance of reaching the Carling Cup final after their 2-1 win over Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Hammer’s manager, Avram Grant, reportedly may get the axe at Upton Park.

Robin van Persie is back

Birmingham v Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed Cesc Fabregas, rested Robin van Persie, and Alex Song will be back for tomorrow’s match against Birmingham.

We get back Song, Fabregas – who was suspended – and Van Persie. They will be back in the squad. “We lose Diaby for a calf strain, [he will miss] three weeks approximately.

The squad will be approximately the squad that has gone to Wigan.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish believes big teams don’t like to play his team away from home.

“Nobody likes coming here. People keep saying that – and long may it continue. We have earned that reputation and want to preserve it. We know Arsenal are capable of turning anybody over on their day, but if they feel a bit nervy, that could just give us a bit extra. We need to make sure that Arsenal are another big club who go home knowing they have been in a game.
